Southend was a popular traditional seaside resort famous during the Victorian era. It’s located about 40 miles from central London, with easy train access which makes it a popular holiday destination for Londoners. Located in the county of Essex, it used be the south end of part of the town Prittlewell, hence the name Southend. The seaside resort is famous for having the worlds longest pleasure pier measuring at 1.34 miles long. The pier has endured damage through fire over the last few decades but it has gone through repairs recently.  Located on the north side and at the mouth of the Thames estuary the resort boasts 7 miles of beaches.

A great attraction to visit is the Adventure Island which is located right next to the piers entrance; it has a large variety of rides to accommodate adults and children. It is free to enter but you have to pay to ride. Adult peak time wrist bands cost £20 and a child’s cost £10. A rollercoaster called Rage opened in 2007 which is the first of its kind in England. Another place of interest is the Sea-Life Adventure centre where you can view seahorses and sharks and many other kinds of marine animals. Adult tickets cost £6.25 and a child’s costs £4.95. 

Another place to visit for the less adventurous, is the Central Museum, which displays the natural and local human history for south east Essex. Also situated within the museum is the only planetarium outside of London which caters for the south east, where you can enjoy live talks about the night sky and astronomy. Entrance fees are £2.60 for adults and £1.90 for children.

A great place to shop, Southend has a pedestrian friendly high street which stretches for half a mile. Along the high street you can find two shopping centres and plenty of specialist stores. There are several parks and gardens you can visit. The most notable is Belfairs Park & Nature Reserve which can cater for horse riders, golf enthusiasts and tennis lovers. If you prefer something more tranquil then visit the Churchill gardens, which has an array of beautiful ornamental gardens to admire plus a waterfall and a stream.
