Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is situated in Tyne and Wear and is a large City in the county of Northumberland along the bank of the River Tyne. It’s usually known as just Newcastle as it’s easier to write and remember. In the past few years Newcastle has seen a lot of redevelopment especially around the Quayside area.

If you’re into sport especially football, then Newcastle I the place to be they have of course Newcastle United who are based at St James’ Park and have been since 1892. There are also two non-league football teams, which are Newcastle Blue Star and Newcastle Benfield. There is also the Newcastle Falcons Guinness premiership rugby union club, which has had more publicity in the past few years due to Jonny Wilkinson home club. There are also ice hockey teams, basketball teams, speedway events, greyhound racing and of course the Newcastle BUPA Great North Run which happens every year and is the world’s largest half-marathon.

Newcastle has a reputation of being a fun loving city with lots of nightlife, including bars, clubs and restaurants. Around the Bigg Market and the Quayside more and more clubs, pubs are opening up. A new indoor complex called The Gate which has bars, upmarket clubs, cinema and restaurants has become very popular with locals and visitors who have come for a good night out.

Other places of interest around Newcastle are the Theatre Royal, which is the largest theatre in Newcastle; Chinatown, which is opposite St James’ Park, has a carnival of colour in January or February that always attracts lots of visitors, Newcastle Science Festival, Orange Evolution music festivals. If you like a bit of shopping head to Eldon Square Shopping Centre, which has the largest Fenwick department store, there’s also a John Lewis there’s also shopping in Northumberland Street, Eldon Garden and Monument Mall, Grainger Market, Newgate Centre and Central Arcade, so loads of places to shop.
