What To Do After Suffering An Injury.

If you have been unfortunate enough to suffer an injury following an accident it can be hard to know how serious the injury is without seeking medical advice. Lots of us will suffer for longer than we should just so as not to make a nuisance of ourselves and see if the problem can heal itself. This is unnecessary and may cause unnecessary damage to the original injury. Medical experts are there to help and it is essential to visit a doctor if you are in any pain. Pain is the body’s way of saying that something is wrong; therefore if you are experiencing any discomfort you should always get yourself checked out.

Also, you should not try to ‘work through’ any discomfort. For example, if you are experiencing pain from performing a specific action or movement, you should immediately stop doing the action and rest the injury. If you continue with the activity it will only cause further harm in the long run. It is true that some accidents can be treated at home but if in doubt it is always advisable to seek medical advice. Incorrect self-treatment can make the situation worse in some cases.

You should always visit a medical professional if you are suffering from any of the following symptoms: firstly if the injury causes severe pain, swelling or numbness. These are serious symptoms and it could be that the swelling signifies a fracture or a serious sprain. If you cannot tolerate any weight on the area then you should definitely visit a doctor as this is a serious sign that something is wrong. Doctors can also prescribe strong pain killers that you may not be able to purchase over the counter in order to make the pain more bearable. If the pain or dull ache is accompanied by increased swelling or joint abnormality then a doctor definitely needs to look at the injury and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

If you don’t have any of the symptoms mentioned above then you might be safe to treat the injury at home. Again, if you any doubts whatsoever then be safe and visit a doctor. If the pain gets any worse then seek professional medical advice. However, if you do decide to treat your injury at home, you should make sure that you are resting the injury as much as possible. Keep all activity to a minimum and avoid putting too much pressure on the injury. You should apply an icepack to the injured area for 20 minutes at a time, four to eight times a day. If the area is swollen then compression may help to reduce this. You can fashion compression wraps yourself or there is special equipment that you can get from your medical advisor. Finally, if possible keep the injured knee, ankle or elbow elevated on a pillow, above the level of your heart in order to help decrease swelling.

If the injury you have suffered in the result of an accident that was not your fault then you may have a case to claim for accident compensation. Medical expenses can be very large depending on the extent of the seriousness of the injuries. Compensation can help to fund these medical expenses and any other losses incurred as a result of the injury such as loss of earnings.
