Tips for avoiding accidents in the home
We all try to be responsible for ourselves and be aware of our own safety when we are out and about, especially on those occasions when we go somewhere new and unfamiliar. Most of us are sensible enough to be on the look out for hidden dangers and things that could be harmful, but for some reason many of us seem to forget about safety when we are in our own homes. This is probably because our home is the one place that we are completely comfortable in and because we know where everything is when we are at home. Our home is the place we most associate with relaxation and comfort; therefore we may not necessarily think that we are in any kind of danger here.
However, statistics show that over 2 million people are injured in their own homes each year in Britain, and thousands more have accidents which prove fatal. These statistics alone should make you stand up and pay attention. It is more important than ever to protect you and your family when at home because you are all so relaxed and accidents may come out of nowhere.
The list of household accidents is endless. Accidents can literally happen anywhere in the home and the sad fact is that most of them could have been avoided with a little common sense and forward thinking.
If you have young children around the home then it is more important than ever to check for potential hazards and put measures in place to avoid accidents. This is where things like baby proofing the house really comes into its own. Purchasing and setting up baby proofing products may sound like a lot of hard work, but if the safety of your child means anything to you then it is an essential process. Things that can make your home safe include putting locks or safety latches on low level cupboard doors as this can stop babies trapping their fingers or coming into contact dangerous contents within the cupboard.
The biggest hazard in your house is the stairs. These can cause problems for adults and children alike as one wrong step and you could lose your footing and end up seriously injuring yourself. If you have children in the house then it is a good idea to look into getting a secure gate fixed at the top and bottom of the staircase as this will deter your child trying to climb the stairs. Another idea is to fit a secure railing or banister in your home, this is especially important if you have steep stairs. The main reason that people fall on the stairs is because they don’t have anything secure to hold onto so eliminate this problem with a sturdy rail.
Another safety hazard within the home is electrical appliances. These need to be connected properly and any leads or wires tucked away so as not to pose a tripping hazard. It is also important to make sure that the wires are kept in good condition and not damaged or exposed as this could be hazardous. If you do find a problem with any of your appliances then it is of paramount importance to contact your manufacturer immediately and arrange an appointment to get the product repaired. Never leave a faulty product thinking it will be ok as it could lead to accidents.
Kitchen appliances are particularly hazardous; things such as cookers, irons and washing machines should never be left alone with children. Always make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in the home so that you can deal with a fire quickly and easily.
Cooking is one of the most hazardous activities you can carry out in your home. It is essential to never leave your food alone when cooking, especially if you are using an open hob and never leave children or pets alone in the kitchen when cooking.
Safety awareness and common sense is something that you should teach your child from an early age. Fire safety is a really important skill to learn from an early age and this way it should become second nature to them as they grow up and being to experiment with cooking. Always make sure you have a fully functioning fire alarm and that you check it works on a regular basis.
However, in some cases no matter how much you try and pre-empt hazards occurring, accidents can still happen. It is a sad fact of life that accidents can happen even in the safest of homes, for example faulty equipment can often be beyond your control. However if you do do everything you can to protect your family and yourself at least you will have complete peace of mind.
